POWER OUTPUT OF MARAETAI

RISE TO 100,000 K.W. EXPECTED

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 17. An increased flow of water is coursing down the Waikato river from Lake Taupo to add another 10 feet to the head of the lake at the Maraetai hydro-electric station. This will probably boost the output of the three generators at the unfinished station next week from 95,000 k.w. to 100,000 k.w.

Maraetai will then be contributing almost as much electricity to the grid as is needed for the peak demand of the Auckland Electric Power Board, the largest supply authority in the country. Only the Arapuni station (157,800 k.w.) will then be a bigger power producer in the North Island. The control gates at Lake Taupo were lifted at midday today to start the current stage of the lake-raising programme. The engineers expect the increased flow to reach the Maraetai dam about midday tomorrow, and the lake to rise from 600 feet to 610 feet above sea level by about midday on , Monday.
