MAGISTRATE’S COURT

THURSDAY (Before Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.) REMAND ON THEFT CHARGE Trevor James Crowe, aged 18, a labourer (Mr J. G. Leggat), was remanded to April 15 on a charge of breaking and entering the shop of Katherine Bradley at 19 Chancery lane on April 5 and committing theft. Detective-Sergeant G. W. Alty, when asking for the remand, said that Crowe was to be charged jointly with another youth who had appeared in Court on Wednesday. IDLE AND DISORDERLY Donald John McNeil, aged 36, a seaman and painter, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within three months when he appeared on a charge of being idle and disorderly in that he had insufficient lawful means of support. He pleaded not guilty. Constable R. H. Mitchell said that on April 9, for the second night in succession, McNeil had been found sleeping at the Christchurch railway station. He had 7d in his pockets. Brigadier L. B. Tong, of the Salvation Army, said that McNeil had been given a job, but had not worked at it for a fortnight. Remarking that McNeil had a number of recent convictions, the Magistrate said he would sentence him to three months in gaol if he came before him again. REMANDED John William Alfred Petterson, aged 50, a labourer, was remanded to April 13 on a charge of being found without lawful excuse in the premises of Colin Curtis at 82 Chester street on April 8, but in circumstances that did not disclose the intention to commit any other offence. Senior-Sergeant C. A. G. Mcßae, who prosecuted, said that drink seemed to have got into Petterson's system, and his relatives intended to apply to have him sent to an inebriates’ home.
