EXCURSION AIR FARES
SERVICE TO FIJI NOT APPROVED SMALLER PLANES TO BE USED ON ROUTE (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 8. A proposal by Pan American Airways to introduce excursion fares between Auckland and Fiji has been rejected by the New Zealand Government. The fare proposed was £44 return, against the present fares of £5B and £63 16s from April 20 on Tasman Empire Airways’ and British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines’ services. The latest move by Pan American Airways is to take its big Boeing Stratocruisers off the Auckland-Fiji run and replace them with . Douglas DC4 s. airline, in a stratement, says that it is uneconomic to fly the twodecker Boeing aircraft to Auckland If the company were allowed to run a service across the Tasman Sea, it would be economic. Tasman Airways is the only airline allowed to carry passengers across the Tasman. The last Stratocruiser will leave Auckland for the United States on May the first DC4 will arrive at Whenuapai on May 6. The DC4’s. however, will, begin a twice-weekly service in and out of Auckland, compared with the present weekly service. As a compensation for the absence of the Stratocruiser, Pan American Airways will use DC4’s specially fitted with bigger seats and a lounge.
