The Prime Minister (Mr Holland) will visit Christchurch at the week-end to attend the annual meeting of the Fendalton electorate of the National Party on Saturday evening. He will fly from Wellington to Christchurch on Saturday morning, and he will return north by air on Sunday morning. The Admiralty has approved the award of the honorary rank of captain R.N.R., to Mr F. E. Harmer. C.M.G., chairman of the New Zealand Shipping Company, and Mr D. F. Anderson managing director of the P. and O. Company, in recognition of the outstanding support which they, through their shipping companies, have given ,to the Royal Naval Reserve in the postwar years.—London, April 7.

Mr C. I. Nathan has retired from the chairmanship of the board of trustees, of the New Zealand Institute for the Blind after holding the post for the last nine years. His successor, elected at the annual meeting of the institute in Auckland yesterday is Mr H. C. McCoy. He was the only person nominated for the post. Mr Nathan has been a member of the board since 1931. and one of the Nathan family has been on the board ever since the institute was established in 1889. ’Mr McCoy also has a long association with the institute. He has been a member of the board since 1929. and deputychairman for the last 11 years. Mr Charles B. Mclntosh, of Lincoln, Nebraska, has arrived in Christchurch to take up a visiting lectureship in the geography department at Canterbury University College. He will remain in Christchurch until the end of the year. At the University of Nebraska Mr McIntosh has been teaching part-time and' doing research for his doctorate. He has been awarded a travel grant to cover his travelling expenses to and from New Zealand. Mr Mclntosh is accompanied by his wife and three sons, aged nine, eight and four years. Inspector J. McGrath, of the Christchurch Central Police Station, who has been transferred to Napier as officer in charge of that district, was bidden farewell yesterday afternoon. Inspector E. J. C. Hay, on behalf of members of the force in the Christchurch district, presented him with a suitcase, a leather writing compendium, and a piece of crystal. Good wishes were expressed by the following representatives of various branches:—lnspector D. McKenzie, benior-Detectives M. Brown and J. J. Halcrow; Sub-Inspec-tors F. J. Brady and J. C.
