ADDINGTON MARKET

SMALLER ENTRIES YESTERDAY MOST PRICES REMAIN FIRM The fat stock and store stock sales were held together at Addington yesterday. As it was an off-day after the Easter holiday, yardings generally were small, and among the fat stock quality was not as good as normal. Nevertheless, most sales were good, and the sale for fat sheep particularly so. Chatham Islands ewes formed a considerable proportion of the store sheep offering and sold well. Rain during the night and throughout the morning spoiled the appearance of the ewes, but the few buyers present apparently meant business. STORE SHEEP The yarding of store lambs was 2988, against 3770 last week, and was of good quality for the most part. The attendance was not big, but there were buyers for the best. Prices were about on a par with last week for good style Romney cross ewe lambs, but other sorts were 2s to 3s a head below last week. Top price for ewe lambs was 66s 6d for a pen of 80 excellent Romney cross from a southern client. The best wether lamb price was 50s 6d for a line of 139 from C. W. McKenzie (Mitcham), who sold another 181 at 44s 6d and 100 small sorts at 37s 6<i. Values were:— Best ewe lambs, to 66s 6d, Good, 45s to 545. Others, 32s to 435. Best wether lambs, to 50s 6d. Good, 41s to 47s 6d. Others, 28s to 40s. An entry of 1242 two-tooths came forward, against 3894 last week. Quality was indifferent for the most part, but there were a few good lines, mostly from dealers. The market was erratic, but considering that it was an off day, and that the season is now late, the sale was satisfactory. Prices were 5s to 8s a head down on last week, except for the best, which showed little change. Top price was £5 5s for a pen of 76 from a southern vendor. The Chatham Islands ewes made from £3 5s to £4 ss. Values were:— Good Romney and crossbred ewes, to £5 ss. Others, £3 to £4 10s. Medium halfbred, 70s to 82s. Others, 53s to 675. The entry of adult ewes was 6141, against 11,321 last week, and apart from some Chatham Islands drafts, was of mixed quality. The attendance was larger than might have been expected for an off day, and the sale was sound throughout, with a steady demand for everything at about last week’s rates. The Chatham Islands sheep met a very good sale, and made up to 665, tofc> price of the day, from 52s for good sorts. A pen of fresh young ewes from F. A. Lanauze (Chatham Islands) made 695. Five-year ewes made to 54s 6d, which w’as paid for a pen of Romney cross from Mrs F. Richards (The Point). Values were:— Good four-year Romney and crossbred, to 665. Medium, 55s to 595. Others, 35s to 51 s. Medium fine-woolled, 47s to 81s. Good aged, to 555. Others, 28s to 40s. Fat Lambs The entry of fat lambs was 2249, compared with 2266 last week. Quality was moderately good, but there were fewer lots of extra good lambs. It was a sound sale for all classes, with competition particularly good for the best quality. Butchers and freezers all bought freely. Prices were steady, except for the best lambs, which were up to 2s dearer. Top price was 78s Id for three from R. Bailey (Ashley). Other good sales were 99 at 69s Id to 74s Id from T. and L. Allen (Killinchy), and 105 shorn at 60s 7d to 63s Id from H. T. Grigg (Hororata). Values were:—

co ?? e , of fat sheep was 3339, against 5247 last week. Quality was fairly good, but there was a big shortage of topgrade wethers, and this combined with the short over-all entry, made the market very strong. Good wethers were 4s a head up on last week, and in many cases 2s or 3s more. Ewes were 2s dearer for ordinary and medium sorts, and up to 4s dearer for the best. The sale finished very strongly, with prices higher than at any point.

Top price for wethers was 80s Id for six from J. C. Bruce (Hawarden). Brookdale Estate (Springfield) sold 80 at the excellent average of 75s 7d. Top price for ewes was 55s Id for eight from the estate of Jas. Carr (Methven).

STORE PIGS The store pig entry was also much smaller and consisted mainly of weaners. The attendance was smaller and values were easier by 4s to 6s a head. Values were:— Small weaners, 20s to 30s. Best weaners. 35s to 425. Slips. 48s to oBs. Small stores, 60s to 70s. Medium stores, 75s to 85s. Large stores. 90s to 100 s. BURNSIDE (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN. April 8. Offerings in all sections at Burnside today were again below the required numbers, and prices accordingly were firm to better than those of last week. All classes shared in the keen demand and improved values. The number of fat cattle penned was 330. Outside buyers were again operating and the sale was buoyant from the outset, values remaining firm to the finish. Prices generally were firm to £1 a head above last week’s. The quality on the whole was fairly good, with a better offering of suitable class cattle. Cows' and heifers also shared in the demand and sold well up to and above last week’s rates.

The entry of fat sheep, although larger than that of last week, was insufficient for the demand and prices were firm to 2s to 3s above those of last week, though in the concluding stage the demand for wethers fell away. There was a good display of wethers, with a limited supply of good quality ewes, the number of fat sheep penned being 1960, against 1600 last week. The top price of 85s was the highest at the yards for some ti me - This price was secured on more *than one occasion. Fat lambs, of which there was a moderate entry of 700, were mostly of average class with only a few pens of good quality. Butchers were not operating as keenly as usual, and export buyers acquired most of the yarding. Values in this section did not appear to be above those of late sales. The store cattle display was made up of a few pens of mixed sorts. The demand which has been ruling for some time was again in evidence, and all lots were readily sold at prices well up to recent rates. Runners were scarcer and there was a particularly small entry of vealers. Baconers and porkers were again scarce and prices were above the high values which have been ruling for some weeks.
