EASTER SALE OF BLOODSTOCK

TRAVESTY TO BE AUCTIONED Travesty, the New Zealand record-holder for a mile and a quarter, will be offered to purchasers at the Easter bloodstock sale in Christchurch tomorrow. Travesty was bred by and has done all his racing for Mr H. D. Greenwood. He has won eight races and £4345 in stakes. A six-year-old gelding by Defaulter from Trapeze, and a brother to Desperado and Detract, Travesty won the Jockey Club and Members’ Handicaps at the New Zealand Cup meeting in 1951. After a lapse in form, he showed his real ability when he won the Midsummer Handicap at Riccarton on February 7. He outclassed his opponents, won by six lengths, and ran the mile and a quarter in the New Zealand record time of 2min 1 4-ssec. Travesty was an unlucky fourth in the Wellington Racing Club’s Thompson Handicap. His next appearance was in the Dominion Handicap at Riccarton on Monday, when he finished a close third to The Lum and Marjo. Travesty is engaged on the final day of

Another late entry for tomorrow’s sale is the brown mare, Juriste, by Solicitor General from Lady Ripon (by Paper Money). Juriste is from the same family as Royal Star (New Zealand Cup), Minerval (Auckland Cup), and Studley Royal (New Zealand Cup). Her vendor is Mr H. Lang, Amberley. Film Well Received The film, “The New Zealand Thoroughbred,” has made a good impression in England. „ “Photography and commentary are first class,” commented one sporting publication. “Judged by the quality of the stud farms in the Dominion, they have worked wonders in just over a century.” Horses’ Escapade Two jumpers, Military Chief and Prefect, and two young, unraced thoroughbreds broke away from two loose boxes and a paddock at 85 Middle Park road, Upper Riccarton, on Tuesday afternoon. One of the horses was found near the racecourse on Tuesday evening. The others were found in Ilam road, Fendalton, at 7.30 a.m. yesterday. Military Chief was lame when caught, but the other three were not injured. The horses are trained by H. F. Ford, who was attending the meeting at Riccarton when the horses got away. Both the loose boxes had been locked, and the horses’ escape is a mystery to their trainer. Warnings were broadcast by the police on Tuesday evening, for it was feared that the straying horses would endanger traffic. However, the horses did not cause any such disturbance. The Eleusis Family Royal Voyage and Argument, both winners at Riverton on Tuesday, and Silence, which won the Templeton Handicap at Riccarton. are members of the family founded by Eleusis. Argument was bred at the Stonyhurst Stud, and so was Royal Voyage’s dam, Mauretania. They both descend from the V.R.C. Oaks winner. Elusive, which has founded a very successful branch in New Zealand. Silence descends from Eleusis, through Demeter, Kora, Queen Kora, Speechless, and All Quiet. Sensation at Ellerslie The maiden two-year-old Gillace caused a sensation at Ellerslie on -Tuesday when he beat the top three-year-old. Gendarme, in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes. This seven-furlong event is run at weight-for-age, with allowances. Gillace had 6-5 and Gendarme 8-8. Gillace’s winning margin was a nose. Gillace ran to the front early in the run home, and held his lead on the outside to the end. Gendarme made his run

right on the Inside and he was in front a stride or two past the post. Gillace is a bay colt by Gilpin from Gay Lace, owned by Mr W. Duetsch and trained at Rotorua by C. Bolgar. Honours for Riccarton Sire Valescure established himself as one of the best staying sons of the Riccarton sire. Treasure Hunt, when he won the Great Autumn Handicap at Riccarton on Tuesday. Proof of the sire’s versatility was provided at Ellerslie on the same day, when Tamavua, another three-year-old, brilliantly won the open sprint, the Bledisloe Handicap. Moidore completed Treasure Hunt’s “bag” for the day by winning the Autumn Nursery Handicap at Riccarton. Moidore is raced by J. S. Shaw, Valescure’s trainer. Tamavua completed a double for the Auckland Club’s meeting on Tuesday. On Monday, he won by a head from Misprint in the Huia Handicap. On Tuesday, he was in front before the end of a furlong and never looked like being beaten. The dam of Tamavua is Recipient, a daughter of Cambria Park and the Lucullus mare, Recipio. Moidore is the second • produce of Centime (Defaulter —Citoyenne), a sister to Citril and Derene, which both won the Great Easter Handicap and other good races. Moidore is bred to prbduce great speed and he should win good races next season if he makes the progress expected of him. Hastings Brackets.—Additional brackets ip races on the Hastings Jockey Club’s programme for Saturday are:—Autumn Handicap: Merry Crooner and Parker. Rossowa and Rowley Mile, St. Bride and Vai's Boy; Oreka Handicap: Stepova and Stylish Robin.—(P.A.l
