SOCIETY OF f ARTS

ANNUAL EXHIBITION OPENED

A tribute to the late Mr Archibald F. Nicoll. who was a member of the council of the Canterbury Society of Arts, was paid by the president (Mr C. S. Lovell-Smith) last evening when he opened the society’s seventy-third annual exhibition of New Zealand art in the Durham street Art Gallery. At Mr Lovell-Smith’s request those present stood in silence in memory of Mr Nicoll. “His death was a loss to the whole of New Zealand,’’ said Mr LovellSmith. “New Zealand has lost a great artist, but we have lost one of our number. He was a wise counsellor, a generous man both in deed and word, a man of forthright integrity and a great friend to art in New Zealand.’’ Mr Lovell-Smith made no comment on the work exhibited except to say that the pictures spoke for themselves. He mentioned that the portrait of Mr H. Harrington by Mr Nicoll was hung temporarily until the arrival from Dunedin of Mr Nicoll’s portrait of Sir Bernard Dawson, which was one of his last Works.
