READINGS OF N.Z. VERSE

POETS TO PRESENT OWN WORK Five New Zealand poets will read selections from their verse in a programme of poetry readings which will be presented by the Theatre Arts Guild in Christchurch on April 18 and 20. The poets are James K. Baxter, Louis Johnson, and Anton Vogt, of Wellington, William Hart-Smith, of Timaru, and Denis Glover, of Christchurch. Verse by other New Zealand poets will also be read by Frona King, Pippa Robins, Cynthia Ward, and Alan de Malmanche. Among the poets selected are A. R. D. Fairburn. Allen Curnow, and J. R. Hervey. Poems by W. B. Yeats will also be read, and there will be different programmes each evening. The programmes will be introduced by the chairman of the guild (Mr R. N. O’Reilly). In addition to the poetry readings a scene from a verse play will be presented by the Canterbury University College Drama Society under the direction of Mr M. L. McGlashan. The scene is the battle scene from “The Axe,” by Allen Curnow.
