WIDE SERVICE TO EDUCATION

FINE RECORD OF MR A. GREENWOOD Mr A. Greenwood, of Christchurch, has been elected junior vice-president of the New Zealand School Commit-, tees’ Federation and, in the normal order of advancement, will be Dominion president for the 1956 conference in Christchurch. He has been a delegate to all' conferences since 1938. The Canterbury School Committees' Association congratulated Mr Greenwood on his election last evening, and recalled his long and wide service to education. The Sydenham School Committee was his first interest when he was a member for two years. Since then he has been chairman of the Richmond committee for 12 years, and has had 15 years on the Shirley Intermediate School Committee, helding all offices. Since 1941 Mr Greenwood has been secretary of the Canterbury School Committees’ Association and had one term as secretary of the New Zealand federation. He has been a member of the Canterbury Education Board for the last 11 years, including seven years as chairman of the finance committee.

After four years on the Christchurch Technical College board, Mr Greenwood joined the Papanui Technical High School board four years ago when the new organisation was introduced and for two years he has been a member of the central Christchurch Post-primary Schools Board of Governors. For the last year Mr Greenwood has been a member of the Canterbury University College Council.

At present Mr Greenwood has leave of absence from many of these bodies because of a breakdown in health. At one stage has was attending up to 25 sub-committee and general meetings a week in the service of education.
