WOMEN’S TRIAL MATCH

CRICKET

SELECTION OF TEAM TO TOUR BRITAIN (Neu) Zealand Press Association} WELLINGTON, March 23. The 16 players to comprise the New Zealand women’s cricket team to tour England in 1954 will be announced after the three-day trial concludes at the Hutt Recreation Ground tomorrow. Today's trial was marred by rain, which held up progress for an hour, and the pitch am outfield were slow. Among those to bat well was J. Currie (Canterbury), who showed plenty of enterprise. More experienced players in J. Lamison, V Coutts, L Lama son. and J. Clothier gave pleasing displays. Some of the fielding was first-class. J. Hatcher took an excellent catch in the slips to dismiss I. Lamason, and M. Rouse (Canterbury) caught the eye for smart ground fielding and good returns. P. Blackler (Canterbury) was v easily the most successful bowler, her Slow breaks taking seven wickets for 32 runs.

Bowling.—P. Batty, 20 overs, 10 maidens, 21 runs, 1 wicket; E. Paton, 20, 11, 19, 1; J. Coulston, 13, 2, 14, 0; N. Cliffe, 7,4, 13, 0; P. Blackler, 22.3, 10. 32, 7; J. Browne, 14, 4, 22, 0; J. Hatcher, 9,3, 12, 0; B. Fuller, 4,1, 9,0; R. McKenzie, 8,7, 1, 1. WOMEN’S MATCH CANTERBURY IN GOOD POSITION With only three wickets in hand in its second innings and still 23 runs behind Canterbury’s first innings score of 145, Otago is in a bad position in a women’s representative match for the Mary Machin Shield. Otago in its first innings made 32 in reply to Canterbury’s 145, and followed on. At the close of play yesterday Otago had lost eight wickets for 90 runs in its second innings. Canterbury batted first and made 39 before the first wicket fell, and the remaining batsmen scored fairly freely, though slowly, to bring the total to 145. E. Woods was top scorer for Canterbury with 31, and Z. Moore, the last batsman, made a valuable 26 before she was well held by Whitelock. Otago began its first innings confidently, although the Art wicket fell with only 11 runs on the board. A stand by A. McLeod (14) helped consolidate Otago's score. The remaining batsmen, however, added only three runs—six of the eight failing to score. Otago’s second innings opened as badly an the first, the first wicket falling at eight. The first innings collapse, was, however, not repeated, Whitelock, who failed to score in the first innings, atoned for her lapse in the second innings, and when play ended for the day she was still in, after having made an invaluable 37.
