COBALT “BOMB” FOR BRITAIN

CANADIAN GIFT FOR CANCER TREATMENT

OTTAWA, March 10. One of the world's medical marvels, the Canadian cobalt “bomb” for cancer treatment, will be shipped to Brit- * ain as a gift, Canada’s atomic head (Dr. C. J. MacKenzle) announced today. The announcement was also made in London by the Duke of Gloucester, as president of the British Empire Cancer Campaign. Dr. MacKenzle said the therapy unit, which has the power of millions of dollars wortn of radium, would be shipped overseas next summer. It will be Britain’s first cobalt bomb, and one of the most modern—a giant steel and lead horseshoe-like affair weighing about seven tons. The gift is being financed by Mr J. W. McConnell, 75-year-old former publisher of the “Montreal Star,” as a tribute to the Canadian Health Minister (Mr Paul Martin) and his department.

Dr. MacKenzle said it was being sent to Britain as Canada’s token of gratitude* For years Canadians had had access to the cancer training and research facilities of the United Kingdom and to the latest advances in medical knowledge there. The bomb will treat deep-seated, internal. and inaccessible cancers.
