FIRE OFFICER TO RETIRE

ANNOUNCEMENT BY BOARD MR A. MORRISON’S LONG SERVICE Superintendent A. Morrison, of the Christchurch Fire Brigade, will retire on June 30, as he has passed the retiring age. His retirement was announced yesterday by Mr N. R. Forbes, chairman of the Fire Board. “At the monthly meeting of the board held on Tuesday evening, appreciative references were made to the service Mr Morrison had given the board,” said Mr Forbes in a signed statement. Under the regulations of the Fire Services Council, officers and members of brigades are required to retire at the age of 60 years. According to reports, the Christchurch Fire Board’s

attention was drawn at the end of last year to the regulation as it related to Mr Morrison and another officer. Mr Morrison has been superintendent of the board since 1937, when- he succeeded Superintendent C. C. Warner, whose deputy he was appointed the previous year. Mr Morrison was captain of the Hillside Workshops Brigade, Dunedin, and became known to firemen throughout the Dominion through the success of his brigade at demonstrations. He was apgointed superintendent of the Hawera rigade about 30 years ago and held that position when he was appointed deputy-superintendent by the Christchurch Board. As a fire fighter, Mr Morrison has a reputation for calmness, courage and ability. His brigade has been known for its firm discipline both in quarters and at fires and in the last five years he has played a leading part in the selection of new plant and appliances which have made the brigade probably the best and most modernly equipped in New Zealand. Mr Morrison is at present on holiday in the North Island. Although the Fire Board will have to go through the procedure fixed by the Fire Services Regulations for the appointment of a successor to Mr Morrison, Deputy-Superintendent L. L. Osmond is likely to be the new chief fire officer in Christchurch. He came to the brigade from the Dunedin Brigade four years ago.
