ADDINGTON MARKET

BETTER DEMAND FOR LAMBS TWO-TOOTHS EASIER Another large offering of store sheep came forward at Addington yesterday, but the attendance was a good deal smaller.than usual for this time of year. Many farmers are busy with the delayed harvest and other seasonal work. The yarding was 31,036 compared with 35,993 last week, and was drawn from all parts of the South Island, and from the Chatham Islands. A much reduced offering of lambs was entered, and they sold well with prices fully firm. Two-tooths met a dull sale and were 5s to 8s below recent rates, and old ewes sold well. The yarding of store lambs was 7544, compared with 11,250 last week. Over all, the quality was not up to last week’s offering. The ewe lambs were definitely not as attractive as last sale. There was a good inquiry for good store lambs which were firm on last sale, although at times the market appeared to be a bit deficient in buying power, particularly for lighter lambs. Passings were negligible. Quality for quality. Wether lambs sold well up to recent rates. The market was topned by J. F. Macfarlane (Hawkswood) at 54s 6d for 80. A small pen of nine from ; Dee Bros. (Kaikoura) made 53s 6d. I. L. M. Coop (Kaituna) secured 53s for a pen of 102 lambs, and his second run of 71 made 50s.

Best ewe lambs sold to 625, which was the price paid to H. Denton (Cheviot) for a line of 50. A pen from the south realised 60s. Ewe lambs, however, were much harder of sale than wethers. Values were: Best wether lambs, 51s to 54s 6d. Good, 42s to 48s 6d. Medium, 32s 6d to 39s 6d. Small and backward, down to 225. Best ewe lambs, 57s to 625. Good, 43s 6d to 545. Medium, 38s to 45s 6d. Small and backward, down to 22s 6d. The two-tooth entry was 7426, against 6984 last 'Week, and was the biggest for years. Few exceptional lots were offered, but much of the yarding was made up of usefup sheep. A small attendance followed the sale, and prices for all sorts were 5s to 7s below last week’s rates. Many of the sheep looked excellent buying. .Bidding on open-woolled ewes was once again much more solid than on finewoolled ewes, and there was a number of passings among better class ewes of all descriptions. Secondary sorts were once again relatively easier to sell. Top pnee was £6 for a pen of 69 excellent Rorrjneys from Buckenham Bros. (Dorie), and £5 17s 6d was paid for a splendid line of 115 from A. H. Baker and Son (Waiau). There were several sales at £5 or better. Best price for flne-woolled ewes was 96s for a line of North Canterbury halfbreds, and two lots reached 955. Values were:— Best crossbreds, to £6. Good, 90s to 105 s. Others, 45s to 85s. Good Corriedale and 82s to 965. Medium, 70s to 81s. Others, 43s to 68s. The yarding of old ewes was 15,793 against 17,031 last week, . and apart from a sprinkling of lines of fresh young ewes, was made up of sheep of doubtful age, and frequently unsound in the feet. A much larger attendance watched the sale, and bidding was a good deal freer than it was last week, though there was little change in prices. Top price was 81s for a magnificent pen of four, six and eight-tooth Romneys from Mid-Canterbury, and the best of the Chathams two, and three-shear ewes, from Gregory Hunt (Pitt Island), also made 81s. An excellent line of 130 fouryear halfbreds from J. Harold Parsons (Mount Victoria) made 70s. Values wene:— Good four-year halfbreds, to 70s. Medium, 50s to 58s. Good four-year crossbred, to 68s. Others, 52s to 61s. Good aged ewes, to 61s. Medium, 46s to 545. Others, 23s to 425. The few wethers offered sold up to 555.
