INVESTITURE AT PALACE

PITBOY AWARDED GEORGE CROSS LONDON, March 10. A 15-year-old pitboy, John Bamford, led a long line of 280 famous men and women at the Queen’s investiture at Buckingham Palace today. Bamford received the George Cross for valour in a fire at his home last October. The citation said that Bamford helped his father save his two younger brothers, though terriblv burned about the face and body. He showed courage of the highest order. Bamford’s back is still painful and his right hand is still affected. The Queen spoke to Bamford, pinned the George Cross on his breast, and shook his hand. This was the Queen’s fifth investiture. She decorated 50 officers and men for gallantry in Malaya and Korea.
