ADDINGTON MARKET

GOOD SALE FOR FAT STOCK STRONG DEMAND FOR EWES There was an excellent sale for fat stock at Addington yesterday. A big yarding of fat lambs was readily absorbed at firm rates. The entry of fat sheep was up by more than 2000, and the sale was a very sound one, especially for ewes, which were again dearer. The fat cattle market, too, lost nothing by comparison, and store cattle also sold well. FAT LAMBS The entry of fat lambs was 2797, compared with 1926 last week. It was a mixed entry, with a number of pens of really good lambs, a good sprinkling of medium sorts, and a big tail-end. Notwithstanding the latest farthing increase in schedule rates, the market showed no appreciable change, except perhaps for good butchers’ sorts, of which there were comparatively few. Works buyers operated fairly freely. Several graziers were in the market for lighter sorts. Top price for the sale was 78s Id for 16 from J. H. Pitman (Rotomanu). Two other pens made 77s Id. Some heavy drafts were to hand from the West Coast, and of these J. Purcell (Wataroa) sold 10 at 74s Id, his line of 78 averaging 69s 6d, and L. A. Shuttleworth (Ikamatua) sold 28 at an average price of 67s 6d, his 15 tops making 72s Id. Values were:— Best lambs, 71s 7d to 78s Id. Good, 62s Id to 69s 7d. Medium, 55s Id to 59s Id.

the balance of a complete herd, the yarding of dairy cattle numbered 24 head, mostly of a very nondescript type. Four or • five really good Friesian heifers sold from £3B to £44, and the few good, average Friesian cows made from £36 to £43. Poorer types otf cows sold up to £33, with the worst of the offering making £lO. Heifers of secondary quality sold from £lB to £25. The special entry comprised a draft of 40 spring-calvers from a Mid-Canterbury herd which Is being dispersed. The cattle were big-framed, good-conditinoed Shorthorn and cross cows. They sold from £lB to £39, and the average was £26 12s 6d. STORE CATTLE A feature of the store cattle entry was the draft of 200 head from Molesworth Station. They were good, average cattle, not quite as attractive as the station’s entry of two weeks ago. The demand was not quite as keen as of late, but, taking quality into consideration, prices were satisfactory. The line sold from £3l 12s 6d to £3B 7s 6d. Of the relatively few other stores to hand, interest centred on an attractive consignment of black and black polledcross cattle which sold from £3O 11s to £36 16s. VEALERS The small yarding of veal met with a ready sale at enhanced values, at times as much as £2 10s a head. They were a good quality lot of cattle. Values were:— Prime large runners, to £24 16s. Good, £l6 to £l9 18s 6d. Medium, £l2 to £l6. Best suckers, £ll 13s 6d to £l7 3s 6d. Medium. £8 3s 6d to £lO 3s 6d. Best calves. £7 Ils to £lO 3s 6d. Small and rough, down to £2 12s. FAT PIGS entry of porkers was much larger than last week, and the quality was very good. The sale opened with values fully up to last week’s rates and continued the same throughout. Choppers were forward in much larger numbers, and values were easier by 10s to 20s a head. The entry of baconers was smaller and the quality was not up to the usual standard. Mediumweight baconers met good competition, but heavier types were easier by 5s to 8s a head. Values were:— Light porkers, £5 9s 6d to £6 9s 6d. Medium, £6 12s 6d to £7 Is 6d. Heavy, £7 4s 6d to £7 19s 6d. ; Average price per lb, 18d to 19Jd. ; Choppers, £6 18s 6d to £l5 Is. Light baconers, £8 14s 6d to £9 4s 6d. [ Medium, £9 9s 6d to £lO 4s 6d. STORE PIGS The store pig entry was of average size and consisted mainly of weaners and slips. The attendance of buyers was much larger than last week and, although the sale opened on a cautious tone, values improved as it progressed. Values were:— Small weaners, from 25s to 30s. Best, from 35s to 465. Slips, 48s to 555. Small stores, 65s to 85s. Medium, 88s to 100 s. Large, 102 s to 110 s. TINWALD There was a yarding of about 16,000 store sheep at the Tinwald stock sale yesterday. Prices generally were down on the recent ewe fair, but the best lines sold at late rates. Two-tooth ewes sold up to 90s, fourtooth to 68s, six and eight-tooths to 655, four-year ewes to 555, five-year to ■ 425, ewe lambs to 725, and wether lambs to 40s.
