LITTLE RIVER EWE FAIR

QUALITY BELOW NORMAL TOP-PRICE £7/12/6 FOR TWO-TOOTH For the first time for many years, quality was disappointing among the two-tooths at the Little River ewe fair yesterday. The difficult season has had a particularly bad effect on young Romney and crossbred sheep,- and the standard of yesterday’s offering was well below the very high mark that is now expected at "Little River. Prices corresponded with the style of most of the entry, and were no better than at -Addington the last week or two. There were good prices for some of the best sheep, but most sold at round current rates.

The entry was 11,987, including 5324 two-tooths, against an entry last year of 10,860, which included 5185 twotooths. As usual the sheep all came •from Peninsula breeders, or farmers, and were all Romney or Romney crosses.

The two-tooths, usually a collection second to none in the Dominion, were showing the effects of the difficult season more generally than have the finer woolled ewes at the northern fairs. Many of them were small, and almost all were smaller than usual. Some of the top lines were of the usual excellent quality, but many lines were mixed in the wool. The older ewes were the usual collection of farmers’ ewes cast for age interspersed with a few good lines from the larger properties. Few were of genuine age. and the mouths and feet of the majority left something to be desired. Demand for the two-tooths was restrained throughout the day. Some values were difficult to follow, but the majority of the ewes made about recent Addington rates. The best sold very well, and the top price, £7 12s 6d, was 3s higher than the previous highest for the season. Old ewes met a surprisingly good market, and were consistently a shilling or two above recent Addington rates for comparable sheep. Some of the better lines were undervalued by buyers, and there were a few passings among this class. The Top Prices Top price of £7 12s 6d was paid for the top pen of 61 from the very fine offering from T. Masefield (Gough’s Bay). Beside getting top price, an honour he takes almost by habit each year, he secured the next two prices at £7 Is and £7. His offering of 249 ewes averaged the excellent figure of £6 19s a head, against his average of £6 6s for 267 last year. A. M. Helps (Mount Pleasant) had his usual splendid collection of two-tooths forward. His top pen made £6 17s 6d, and the 294 he sold averaged £6 6s, against £5 9 S for the 200 sold last year. The Annandale Estate offering was smaller than usual this year, but was still by far the largest among the two-tooths. The 856 ewes sold averaged £5 3s, against an average last year of £4 2s 6d for 1860 sold. A. R. Haylock (Akaroa) sold a pen at £6 15s and another at £6 ss. The top pen of Annandale ewes made £5 15s, and that price was paid for 120 from the Springvale Estate (Little River), and 66 from T. D. Barwick (Birdling’s Flat). Top price last year was £6 15s. An average over 21 lines shows a rise of 12s above last year.

Top price among the older ewes was 655, which was paid for 62 from W. S. Mcßae (Forsyth). G. P. Markham (Te Oka) sold 214-at 635, and 62s was paid for 111 from E. Hurst (Takamatua) and 191 from T. E. Armstrong (Akaroa), whose ewes were the highest priced sold as five-year. •T? 6 ! followin g is a range of prices, with last year’s for comparison:—

ALBURY EWE FAIR “The Press” Special Service TIMARU, March 10. The penning of two-tooth ewes and annual draft ewes at the Albury ewe fair today numbered fully 10,000 sheep, about 10CO more than last year. The entry was made up for the most part of Romney and Romney-cross ewes. The demand was sustained from start to finish. The sale opened on the two-tooth ewes, which were not of outstanding quality, and finished on the draft ewes. Prices were, if anything, better than at recent ewe fairs. Values were:—Romney-cross two-tooth ewes: extra good, 82s to 102 s; medium, 75s to 86s; inferior, 51s to 745. Four and fiveyear Romney Cross Ewes: extra good, 65s to 725; good. 57s to 645; medium, 49s to 565; inferior, 30s to 455.
