The Primate and Archbishop of New Zealand (the Most Rev. R. H. Owen) will arrive at the Christchurch airport this morning on an official visit to the diocese of Christchurch. Archbishop Owen is visiting the diocese at the invitation of the Bishop of Christchurch (the Right Rev. A. K. Warren). He will be given an official welcome by Bishop Warren at the Christchurch Cathedral this evening, and he will preach at evensong afterwards. The Primate will visit church schools and institutions in Christchurch tomorrow and he will leave for Timaru later in the day. He will be given an official welcome to Timaru in the evening by the Ven. Archdeacon W. W. Averill at a special service in St. Mary’s Church. He will visit Ashburton on Thursday to meet clergy and laity from the MidCanterbury district of the diocese and will return to Christchurch afterwards. Major-General W. G. Gentry, Chief of the General Staff, and Brigadier J. T. Burrows, Commander of Southern Military District, travelled by air yesterday to Camp Sutton, Otago, where the 3rd Field Regiment is holding its annual camp. The Rev. Dr. G. Calvert Barber, president-general of the Methodist Church of Australasia, which covers Australia and many of the Pacific islands, including New Guinea, Fiji, and Tonga, arrived at Wellington yesterday from Sydney. At the invitation of the Methodist Church of New Zealand he will visit the four main cities and provincial centres. He is professor of theology at Queen’s College. Melbourne University, and is also president of the Australian Council for the World Council of Churches.— (P.A.) Mr W. P. Barnett, who founded the New Zealand Services’ Club in Sydney 33 years ago with four members, and retired from the presidency last month, when the club had more than 200 members, arrived at Wellington yesterday on his way to Auckland. He will return to Sydney in April, but may return to New Zealand permanently. It is his first visit to New Zealand for 23 years. He is a returned soldier of the First World War. —(P.A.) Mr N. O. Steel was last evening appointed Public Relations Officer by the City Council. Four members of the council’s staff answered the invitation to apply for the position. Mr Steel has been associated with the department as assistant Public Relations Officer since its inception. .Mr D,. T. Borley, of Dunedin, was elected national president of the Retail Shop Assistants’ Union at the union’s recent conference at Dunedin. Mr J. G. Shankie, of Wellington, is vice-president, and Mr P. M. Velvin, of Christchurch, is national secretary. —(P.A.) Leave of absence was granted last evening by the City Council for eight months to Cr. A. R. Guthrey and for sirf months to Cr. J. E. Jones. Both councillors are to visit Great Britain. Cr. A. J. Smith was appointed actingchairman of the works committee during the absence of ,Cr. Jones.
