FUTURE, DAVIS CUP COMPETITIONS ‘‘TIME TO CONSIDER TEAM FROM N.Z.” A suggestion that New Zealand could confidently enter a team In a future Davis Cup competition was made by Mr J K. Burtt, president of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association, at a meeting of the management committee last evening. “We have been rather hesitant about putting in a Davis Cup team,” said Mr Burtt, “but I think it Is time for this association to consider selecting a team for a future Davis Cup competition. It is quite probable that our players would not beat the Americans or the Australians, but their play would be well up to Davis Cup standard." The sending of a team to the European zone should be considered, and any move made in that direction should be supported. Mr Burtt made his comment after the chairman of the committee (Mr W. A. Clothier) reported that the gate takings during the recent* visit by the Australians to Christchurch had amounted to £154 Bs. Mr Clothier asked Mr Byrtt to bring forward his suggestion at the next annual meeting of the association. Team Managers Mr J. W. Arnold was appointed manager of the team to play at Wellington on Saturday, March 14, and Mr W. M. Hawkins was appointed manager of the team to play at Timaru on March 22.
