SELWYN RIVER SCHEME
ACQUIRING LAND FOR STOPBANKS Acquisition of land along the Selwyn river for banking purposes was the start of the new Selwyn river control scheme, said the chairman (Mr H. B. Anderson) when the North Canterbury Catchment Board on Friday arranged to provide a simple form of agreement for the landowners concerned. The Soil Conservation and Rivers Control 'Council advised that this scheme should be designed to cope with 30,009 cusecs with a two-foot freeboard on stopbanks. Various suggestions are being investigated by the chief engineer (Mr H. M. Reid) before proposals are announced. Grassing of stopbanks, requested by the Lower Selwyn Hut Owners’ Association, was deferred until the major scheme was defined. Replacement of motorboat speed limit signs, requested by the association, was approved, four miles an hour being set.
