TARANAKI STAKES TO OPERASHAH

SEAFORD WINS MAIN HANDICAP (New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, March 9. Operashah recorded her second win in succession and completed a double for the meeting when she won the 39th Taranaki Stakes on the final day of the Taranaki Jockey Club’s autumn meeting at New Plymouth today. The principal handicap event, the Paul Memorial, was won by Seaford, and the Urenui Handicap, the open sprint, by Gay Pride. These were the two races on which the double operated, and the Sea-ford-Gay Pride combination paid £136 15s 6d for £l. The doubles totalisator handled £16,426 ss, of which £4421 5s was invested on the course. The totalisator handled £54,183 10s, compared with £54,122 10s for the corresponding day last year. The total for the meeting was £101,471, compared with £107,316 10s last year, a decrease of £5845 10s. The weather was fine and the track fast, and there was a large crowd. An inquiry into the falling of horses in the Moturoa Hack Handicap on Saturday was completed, and after the evidence of J. Campbell, rider of Coleraine, one of the horses that fell, was heard, it was found that n'o blame was attachable to any rider. F. C. Cleaver, rider of Mission Prince in the County Welter Handicap on Saturday, was fined £lO for careless riding. Cleaver was alleged to have crossed over on First Over (N. Vaughan) at the straight entrance. R. Melton suffered injuries when his mount, Latest News, fell in the Okoke Hack Hurdles. His condition tonight was reported to be satisfactory. RACE TRIALS ON MARCH 25 The Canterbury Jockey Club will hold race trials at Riccarton on March 25. There will be five events, two for two-' year-olds over five furlongs, two for hacks over six furlongs and a mile, and a seven-furlong open race. All events will be conducted from the birdcage under race-day supervision and conditions. Horses will be ridden by licensed or unlicensed apprentices, who will be weighed out as on race days. The weight for all events will be 8-0. Colours will be worn.
