LYTTELTON NEWS

BOROUGH MILK SUPPLY Tile Lyttelton Borough Council received a letter from the Marketing Department last evening on the milk supply for Lyttelton. The letter offered three methods of supplying the borough. The first was a supply from the Christchurch Milk Company, to be picked up at the treatment station at 11 p.m. by a truck from Lyttelton and landed in Lyttelton ready for delivery at midnight. The extra cost would be 2’/ 2 d a gallon, plus }fcd a gallon. The Government would be reluctant to approve of this method unless the borough agreed to make the vendors pick up and deliver the milk immediately on arrival. It would not be right to allow the milk to stand overnight on the truck. Second, there could be a supply from the Christchurch Milk Company, with the milk picked up at 1 p.m. for afternoon delivery. This would mean that the public would receive milk from 12 to 24 hours old at time of delivery instead of the normal 24 to 36 hours. This method would probably also involve an increased charge. The third suggestion - was a supply from Wrights Metropolitan Milk Company, Yaldhurst, to be picked up at 4 a.m. and landed in Lyttelton at 5 a.m., the delivery time being approximately as at present; The extra cost would be increased from the present 2ted a gallon to 3ted -a gallon. The lettef was referred to a committee consisting of Crs. Gladys Boyd, W. Morris, and F. Barretf for a report. Seaview Terrace The North Canterbury Hospital Board advised the Borough Council last night that it proposed to close Seaview terrace as soon as possible after March 23. The letter said that from documents on the board’s file it appeared that the board had no obligation to do more than maintain the right-of-way as originally constructed. It appeared that the parties intended the terrace to be a footway only. A letter was also received from Messrs Bell and Taylor, solicitors, representing four residents on the upper side of Seaview terrace. The letter said that at the time of the subdivision dn 1905, it was provided that the entire length of the right-of-way was to be maintained by the board to the entire satisfaction of the Borough Council. A further clause imposed on the board an obligation to maintain the retaining walls above and below the terrace. Cr. Boyd moved that the council take no action to prevent the board closing Seaview terrace. An amendment by Cr. Morris, that the council take all steps to prevent the closing of the terrace. Was carried. Personal Cr. A. M. Day, who was appointed to the Lyttelton Borough Council to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Cr. Irene Gilmour, was welcomed by the Mayor (Mr F.-G. Briggs) at the meeting of the council last evening. Selwyn Terrace Wall After receiving a plan of the proposed new wall in Selwyn terrace, the Borough Council last evening agreed to proceed with the work immediately.
