DELICATE OPERATION ON BABY
REMOVAL OF PART OF GULLET (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 9. A 2-day-old boy underwent and survived a delicate operation on the oesophagus—the tube that carries food from the mouth td th > stomach—at. the Green Lane Hospital, Auckland last Wednesday afternoon. The operation has been performed on young babies before, but it is so delicate that few survive it. The baby was born with part of the gullet or oesophagus too narrow for food to be taken. The surgeon removed the narrow portion and joined the two normal-sized ends together. The operation took about an hour. Born at Thamep the baby was rushed first to the Auckland Hospital and then to the Green Lane Hospital on Tuesday night. A hospital official said today that after “a few stormy days” the child was progressing favourably. On Friday there was a crisis, but the baby rallied.
