COUNCIL NEWS IN BRIEF

Applications for permission to install a school patrol at tne pedestrian crossr ing over Shirley road and to instal a crossing over Estuary road to ithe entrance of the New Brighton South School were granted by the Christchurch City Council last evening. Rowing Club’s Site. — A ground site for club buildings and landing stage at the east end of Kerr’s Reach was granted the St. Paul Dallington Rowing Club. A temporary building will house boats and equipment.

Paddling- Pool.— A children’s paddling pool, with the water level at eight inches and a half, is being constructed at Woodham Park. The pool at Abberley Park’ has been completed, and the adjoining areas are being cultivated before sowing down in grass.

Tea Kiosk Renovations.— The tender of £2133 by the T. H. Alexander Building Co. Ltd., fop renovation at the Tea Kiosk was accepted. The money standing to the credit of the piggeries account will be used, the balance to be provided for. in the reserves committee’s estimates. Swimming Club Hours.—As the average attendances figures scarcely warrant the closing of the Centennial Pool to the public for one hour daily, the five swimming clubs concerned will be asked to consider joining forces for the use of the pool and to reduce club hours. Negotiations .have been entered into by the council to purchase a strip of land, not less than 30 feet wide at the rear of the Ridgely Lodge Hall. Merivale Lane Widening.— Land will be obtained for widening of Meri . aie lane between Repton street and Winchester street and. the fences set back. To the west, the street has been widened for many years.

Salisbury Street Zoning.— A recommendation to refuse permission to establish three industrial businesses on land on the north side of Salisbury street between Manchester and Madras streets, was referred back to the Town Planning Committee. The report recommended that all land south of Aberdeen street in the block bounded by Manchester and Madras streets and Bealey avenue and Salisbury street remain residential, except that only’ administrative buildings be permitted on sections fronting Manchester street The proposal was that these buildings must be sited as for residential buildings and must be in residential character. The reason given for such permission wtts that, otherwise it might not be possible to get access to the rear land zoned for industrial purposes
