SOFTBALL
CANTERBURY COLTS BEATEN BY OTAGO The Canterbury Colts’ softball team was beaten by the Otago Colts by 17 runs to 8, in a representative match at English Park on Saturday. Canterbury’s bad fielding and the lack of a consistent pitching line up were the main reasons for the loss of the game.
Hemryks, the Canterbury catcher, gave a performance rarely equalled in representative games, tagging several runners by throwing himself and making the tag while still in mid-air. Robertson, the Canterbury short stop, besides fielding faultlessly, hit two three-baggers, bringing in five runs altogether.
Otago’s fielding was good, and several potential runs were cut off by fine pegging between third and first. In Otago’s sixth innings, several surprise plays left the Canterbury fielders off balance, and Otago scored 11 runs mostly on errors.
In the Schoolboy League, points in the championship are as follows:—P.Y.P.C. 12, Richmond A 12, Y.M.C.A. 8, Christchurch 8, School for Deaf 4, Mclnnes 0. In the minor league, Richmond has a substantial lead.
