PRESENTATION AND PARTY

MISS L. DONOHUE HONOURED

Past and present members of the staff of the Nurse Maude District Nursing Association arranged an afternoon party for Saturday to honour Miss L. Donohue, who is leaving the association after nearly 34 years’ continuous service. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, who with the late Lady Rhodes, a friend of Nurse Maude, was a generous friend to the association at its inception 57 years ago, and has maintained his interest to the present day, kindly offered the grounds of his home, “Otahuna,” for the party, but because of rain in the morning it was decided to hold the first part of the gathering at “Maryknoll,” Cashel street.

There many nurses, representative of almost every decade of the association’s life as well as several specially invited guests, met and were greeted by Miss M. Corkill, matron of the association. Miss Donohue, who was accompanied by her sister, Miss W Donohue, was welcomed with. cheers and was accorded musical honours. After tea had been served, Miss Copkill, on behalf of the nurses, including several former members of the staff who are not now in Christchurch, presented Miss Donohue with a tea set and tray and wished her many years of happy leisure. Mrs J. P. Whatman, who had been in charge of the clothing committee that formerly held sales for the association, Mrs A. J. Benzie, a friend of the Donohue family for more than 30 years, and Mrs J. Ferrier, a member of the board of directors, expressed appreciation of Miss Donohue’s devoted service to the sick of the city and wished her good health and happiness in her retirement. After Miss Donohue had thanked the speakers for their good wishes and her fellow nurses, for their gifts, the entire party visited “Otahuna,” where they were received by Sir Heaton Rhodes. They spent a very happy time in the beautiful grounds and later thanked Sir Heaton Rhodes individually for his hospitality.
