FLOOD PROTECTION
Sir, —I was surprised at the reply given by the chairman of the North Canterbury Catchment Board on the removal of shingle from |he Waimakariri and Ashley rivers. The board should erect the large dragline that is lying • out at Sockburn and give the shingle away at dost to all persons. That machine cost 300,000 dollars, and it will cost £5OOO to erect on the job. Why have all that money wasted? At present only 1000 yards are being removed from the river when 80,000 is being deposited in the lower regions every week. How long will last? We will see another flood like the 1940, and then it will be, “Look out Christchurch, here I come.”—Yours, etc., t INTERESTED/ February 13, 1953.
