AGREEMENT ON ROADS
SUMNER AND CITY COUNCIL SCARBOROUGH RESIDENT’S ( REQUEST “Before Sumner joined the city • there was an official formal agreement , by the city that after amalgamation it would make the Sumner roads and . footpaths as good as the city roads. , This agreement has not been kept,” , said Mr W. Machin, of Scarborough, in , a letter received by the City Council : at its meeting last evening. Mr Machin asked that the council have the dangerous constrictions on Scarborough road removed, and also do a little widening of one or two narrow places because of heavier traffic and more wide, heavy vehicles, which were increasing the danger. Mr Machin said that some residents had not pressed the question of the agreement about the Sumner roads because of the post-war shortages of men and materials. He had discussed the matter over several years with the City Engineer, the Town Planning Officer, and the Town Clerk, but it seemed to require decisions on higher levels, which had not been forthcoming. x “As you know, I do not desire to pin prick the City Council, but have always been as helpful as possible and have given freely of service and money when needed,” said Mr Machin. “But this matter now permits of no further delay, and I am advised that the only course open to a citizen is to apply to the courts for an injunction. This I should dislike.’’ On the recommendation of the works committee the council decided to advise Mr Machin that it did not consider the widening of Scarborough road should be undertaken at present in preference to other more urgent works.
