ACCOMMODATION AT UNIVERSITY
REARRANGEMENT AFTER FIRE The provision of temporary accommodation for Canterbury University College departments which lost their Quarters in the fire early on Friday morning was arranged at a meeting of the college’s estates and building committee yesterday afternoon. The department of psychology will be housed in space made available at 236 Cambridge terrace by the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association. The department of geology will move to “Okeover,” a house on one of the areas of land at Riccarton bought for the site of the new university college. Library books at present kept in “Okbover” will be transferred to other buildings on the Riccarton site. The department of philosophy will be accommodated at 36 Cashel stieet. An endeavour will be made to rent some rooms in Worcester street for staff members of the department of economics. .
Commenting on these arrangements, the Registrar (Mr J. Logie) said that it would be at least six months before repairs to the damaged block were made, but the departments would be back in their old quarters next year. The lecture rooms lost by the School of Engineering would have to be made up by readjustments of the time-table, said Mr Logie. No attempt to replace the Shelley Theatre or to find alternative accommodation is being made by the Canterbury College Drama Society, according to Mr Logie. The society, which has not received any offers of assistance from other theatrical organisations. had decided to go into recess u itil the college had moved to its new site, where it hoped to be provided with satisfactory quarters.
