Franchise at 18 Proposed
The South African Government will consider legislation designed to give Europeans a vote at 18 instead of 21, as the result of a motion passed in the Senate last night. The proposed legislation will give a vote to about 126,000 young men and women. The Defence Minister (Mr F. C. Erasmus) said: "If people of 18 can marry, make wills, have driving licences and shed blood for their country, they should also be allowed to vote.”—Cape Town, February 10.
