FIRE DAMAGES SCHOOL

BLAZE SPREADS UNDER ROOF (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, January 21. The roof, two classrooms, and the cloakroom were badly damaged today When fire broke out in the Grant’? Braes School, Waverley. Machines from the Central and South Dunedin brigades were quickly on the scene, and had the fire under control by 2 p,m. Education Board painters had been burning off on the cloakroom door, and the fire apparently started in the

cloakroom. It spread up a wall to tarred* paper and then to the roof. Fanned by a steady breeze, it spread along the roof to the other end of the school. The roof over two classrooms collapsed. Residents of the areg moved much of the school furniture and books into the playground. Damage from water was fairly extensive. It is not expected that the opening of the school will be delayed.
