SECOND DAY AT TRENTHAM

Programme Likely To Win Stakes MT. DENBY CHOSEN IN HANDICAP (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, January 21. The Riccarton stayers, My Hero and Royal Tan, will not run in the Wellington Racing Club Handicap, the principal event and first leg of the double on the second day of the summer meeting at Trentham tomorrow. A firm pre-post favourite for the race is Mt. Denby, a close second to Crimson King in the Wellington Cud last . Saturday. Mt. Denby shows no ill effects frotn that race. He is the New Zealand record-holder for one mile and a half, and should

be a better-than-average prospect. Huatoki and Lone sstar may be Mt. Denby’s strongest opponents. The second leg of the double is the Metropolitan Handicap in which Hands Off, New Zealand’s best sprinter, is expected to master top weight of 9st 111 b. He finished brilliantly into fourth place under 9st 121 b in the shorter Telegraph Handicap on Saturday, and another furlong should show

the Booby Trap gelding to the best advantage. Gendarme worked attractively at Trentham on Tuesday, and he should make Hands Off do his best. Gendarme and his bracketed mate, Rural Gold, were second and third in the Telegraph Handicap. The improver in the field may be Declare, which raced well below his best form on Saturday, when he was making his first appearance since the New Zealand Cup meeting. , Robinson will run in the Gloaming Stakes in preference to this race. Programme and Commodore, winner and runner-up in the Great Northern Derby, may again dispute the finish of the Gloaming Stakes. This season lacks a really outstanding three-year-old and, because of that, a surprise is quite possible, but Programme races solidly and stays well. He. has the best credentials. Riccarton Candidates z The Riccarton horses. Gold Scheme and Mish Mish, both acceptors for the Gloaming Stakes, are also engaged’ in the Ruapehu Hack Handicap. Mish Mish will run in the stakes, but no decision about Gold Scheme had been made this morning. He would have the better chance in the Ruapehu, in which the class is not strong. Golden Jest, the rUnner-up to Lady Faith in the high-weight on Saturday, will be a strong favourite for the Mungaroa High-weight. The field is a weak one, and there will be few runners heavily backed to beat Golden Jest. Tinonui, third in the high-weight last Saturday, and the top weight, Peter Ora, may fill the minor places. . Cash made a bold first showing in open company in the Anniversary Handicap on the first day of the meeting and finished second to Braille after sharing the pacemaking tb the straight. On the strength of that effort he has a bright chance of winning the January Handicap. Braille, the Anniversary Handicap winner, and Embargo, a useful fourth in the same race, may be the pick of the others, though the newcomers, Pierre, Poetical, and Voiron, should also have fair chances. Top weight of 9-12 is not expected to stop the brilliant Surrey Gold from winning the Nursery Handicap. Mr W. S. Goosman’s Gold Nib colt is unbeaten in three starts at Trentham, ’ a course which he likes. Intuitive, fourth in the Wellington Stakes, the Riccarton-trained Kingship, and Tallarook may do best of the others. Tallarook was a big disappointment in the Wellington Stakes, but that may have been only an isolated lapse in the record of this good galloper. Wally French, winner of his last five races, could take that splendid record a stage further in the Douro Hack Handicap, but he has heavy work ahead of him to concede up to 381 b to some promising gallopers. With 10-3 the Sly Fox gelding will need everything in his favour. Lady Faith may be the horse in this "1 .field to end Wally French's winning run. Lady Faith won the high-weight On the first day with probably half a stone in hand, even though her winning margin of half a head would not suggest that. She was ridden over-confidently by K. Nuttall in that race, and this showed that she is a mare with a lot of ability. Pleasure Bent, which will be having her first race at the meeting, should be the best of the South Island horses. Papiro, Solidago, and Gold Ace are others with good form backgrounds. The weather was fine in Wellington today and the track will be hard and fast. Selections are:—
