RESERVE BANK RETURN

NOTE ISSUE LOWER (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 21. Notes issued by the Reserve Bank stood at £65,517,000 on January 14—a drop of £4,307,000, or 6.2 per cent., from the record Christmas e peak figure of £69,824,000. In the same period last year the note issue contracted by £4.078,000, or 5.9 per cent. Sterling exchange rose by £1,236,000 to £34.352,000, and other exchange by £370,000 to £861,000. Investments were steady at £58,132,000. The principal items in the latest return, with the figures for January 16 last year (all figures in millions of pounds), are as follows:—Bank notes, 65.5 (65.3); State deposits, 10.9 (14.0); banks’ deposits, 73.8 (58.2) gold reserve, 6.0 (5.6): sterling, 34.4 (22.9); investments, 58.1 (54.2); advances to marketing organisations, .9 (.8); other advances to State. 51.0 (51.0); other advances, 6.0 (6.0); and other assets, .5 (3.2) Comparative weekly returns are as follows : Liabilities
