Mr Guzzwell Went Cycling
Mr Fred Guzzwell, who recently attempted to swim 144 miles down the Wanganui river, claims to be the first man to take a bicycle from Collingwood to Karamea. For much of the distance there was no road, and he had to go through the bush. He got lost and was without food for five days. The bicycle was something of a problem: he had to take the pedals off because they kept getting caught in the undergrowth. To cross streams and rivers he had to tie the cycle to ® i°? an d float it across. When he scramb le around a ledge on a cliff face he hung the cycle over the ledge on a length of rope and dragged it round. At this time, about six or seven yegrs ago, Mr Guzzwell was on the staff of the Ashburton Post Office.
