YEARLING SALES AT TRENTHAM

5000Gns For HalfBrother To Dalray MR C. NEVILLE PAYS RECORD PRICE (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, January 19. A determined Australian, who attempted to buy a half-brother to Cal ray, failed on the first day of the twenty-seventh national sale of yearlings today, but the champion’s Greymouth owner, Mr Cyril Neville, had to pay 5000gns, a record price in the history of the sales, to keep the colt in New Zealand. This colt, one of the first crop sired hy Count Rendered, has attracted tremendous interest from the time he was foaled, and it was apparent several months ago that he would set a new figure for a yearling in New Zealand. The previous record purchase at the •ales was 4750gns paid by an Australian owner for Record Reign, a filly by Coronach from Princess Ball, a few. years ago. Bidding for Dalray’s half-brother Opened this afternoon at 3000gns a few seconds after the colt bounded into the ring. He rose to 4000gns in the fiext bid, then to 4250gns, 4500gns, •nd finally to 5000gns, which was Mr Neville ’a bid. .Bidding against Mr Neville was Mr C. McQuillan, manager of the Melbourne branch of Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., who was acting as agent for an undisclosed Australian owner. The colt was “all horse,” with some resemblance to Dalray, and showing terne of the spirit of the champion. He was bred by Mr H. F. Woofindin. Of New Plymouth, who would not have been anxious to sell for less than •OOOgns. Seventy-two yearlings were sold today for 46,860gn5, an average of WOfgns. It was a good start to what should be a good sale. Although there had been no relaxation of restrictions affecting Australian buyers, thfese visitors were active right through the day, for both the high-class youngsters and for the less attractively-bred one*. Ten of the 26 lots sold before lunch today went to Australian bids, and their total for the day wsj 21 head for 13370gn5. There was other overseas interest in the sale. Christchurch-born Mr Neil

Watkins, now prominently associated with the wool industry in Montevideo, Uruguay, today made two purchases worth 1725gns through his agent, Mr Ken Austin. Mr Watkins has reason to be pleased with his previous purchases at the national sales. He bought three youngsters at the 1951 sales, and each of them has been a good winner in Uruguay. Dunedin Owner’s Purchase Fourteen yearlings changed hands today at fow-figure prices. The second highest price was 2900gns, paid by Mr G. J. Barton, of DUnedin, for a fine Chestnut colt by Ruthless from the Nizami mare. Rosina. The vendors of this colt, a half-brother to the good winner, Golden Galleon, were Messrs W. Alexander and E. Simpson, of Te Awamutu. The next highest price was 2350gns, paid by the successful Sydney trainer, T. J, Smith, for a bay colt by Balloch from Rural Lady, one of the first run frofti the Alton Lodge Stud. Sfriith has had an outstanding record with two-year-olds during the last few yeats, and many good winners from his •table have come from the Trentham sale ring. The Alton Lodge offerings attracted mo4t interest today until the appearance of Dalrly’s half-brother. The stud, owned by Sir James Fletcher and Mr J. C. Fletcher, put 16 yearlings into the ring and secured 1748Sgns for them, at an average of 1074gns. Nine of the 16 offerings brought four-figure prices. Tn* new Governor-General, Sir Willoughby Norrie, who has raced horses in England and Australia, made his first New Zealand purchase this afternoon. He went to 750gns to secure a bay colt by Midday Sun from Knock Out. This colt Is a descendant of a well-known family established at the Stonyhurst Stud in Canterbury, and he Was reared at the Alton Lodge Stud. There was applause from the crowd when i r was announced that Sir Willoughby Norrie was the colt’s buyer. The Governor-General was at the ringaide from the start of the sale, and he sought the • advice of the Trentham trainer, "W. J. Bromby, on several of the yearlings. Bromby will be Sir Willoughby Norrie's trainer. Midday Sun, sire of Sir Willoughby Norrie’S purchase, was represented by his first New Zealand crop today, but he aired several good winners in England, one of them being Sterope, twice winner of the Cambridgeshire Handicap. Midday Sun is the second winner of the English Derby to come to New Zealand. The first was Coronach, now dead. The top-priced filly today was a daughter of Faux Tirage, whose stock were also making their first appearance at the sales. This attractive filly is from imported Mi Careme, a daughter of Donatello 11. She was bought by Mr M. Grogan, of Sydney, for 1500gns. Faux Tirage, a son of Big Game, is the htehfest-piced sire to be brought to New Zealand. He cost 25,000gn5.
