RECORD FALLS OF RAIN

The downpour of rain in central Hawke’s Bay on Wednesday afternoon may have been the heaviest fall of rain measured in terms of intensity recorded in New Zealand. However, because most observers record rain for a 24-hour period, records of intense falls are relatively few. A spokesman for the weather office dt the R.N.Z.A F Station, Wi*ram, said yesterday that no record of intense falls of any duration had been kept at that station The heaviest fall of rain in the South Island was recorded at the Public Works Camp, Milford Sound, on April 17. 1939. when 22 inches fell in 24 hours. The heaviest fall in the North Island was at R ! s~ington, Hawke’s Bay on March 11, 1924. when 20.14 inches fell in 10 hours. On January 3, 1949. 25 ooints of rain fell at Wigram in five minutes.
The world record for a 24-hour Period is 46 inches, which fell in the Philippine Islands on July 15, 1911.
