SOIL CONSERVATION EXPERT

VISIT OF MR E. A. NORTON

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 11

Soil conservation problems in New Zealand and the measures being taken to combat them will be studied by Mr E. A. Norton, assistant chief of the United States Soil Conservation Service, who is expected to arrive at Wellington by air from Sydney on Monday at the invitation of the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council.

Mr Norton’s itinerary will cover the major soil erosion and flooding problem areas, the principal native and sown pasture lands, and the forested areas.

Mr Norton will travel with district soil conservators in each major district and meet catchment boards, local specialists and farmers.

■ After investigating the problems in the field and studying grassland farming, he will meet the ministers concerned and the council for full discussions.

Mr Norton has had wide experience in soil conservation, having been associated with Dr. Bennett, one of the architects of the important soil conservation programme in the United States.
