SECOND DAY OF C.J.C. MEETING

RACING

Noble Prince May Win Fendalton Handicap

SPORTS POST FAVOURED FOR SECOND LEG The deterioration in the wather on Monday night has again put an end to the chances of several horses with engagements at Riccarton today, the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s New Zealand Cup meeting. The field for the Fendalton Handicap, the first leg of the double, will probably thin out considerably. A heavy track will not suit Poetical, Naturally, Coral Arc, Prawns, and Gardez. Noble Prince was balloted out with the right of re-entry for this race and is second to return to the field. He is almost certain to compete, and if this race is chosen for him—he is also in the Canterbury Cup—he will be hard to beat. Brutus, a fast-finishing third in the Riccarton Handicap on Saturday, will probably be the favourite if Noble Prince does not run. There will be solid support also for Vitalogy, the Riccarton Handicap winner, Ash, which finished fourth in that race, and Grand Boy, a newcomer. Grand Boy was to have raced on the first day of the meeting, but he was fioodbound in South Canterbury on Saturday morning.

Biassed, Notable, and Gay Gitana have raced well in similar conditions, and they should also be prominent in the finish.

The Hob, Field Chief, Entrancing, and Travesty may be missing from the field for the Jockey Club Handicap, the second leg of the double. The logical favourite is Sports Post, an unlucky third in the Stewards’ Handicap on Saturday Sports Post, W. J. Broughton’s mount in the race, won over this distance, one mile, at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting, beating several smart sprinters on a firm track. Having proved his ability in adverse conditions he will be hard to beat today.

Coaltown is also engaged in the Fendalton Handicap, but the best may be seen of him over a mile.

Light-weights capable of troubling their better-performed opponents are Royal Mail and Dan. These two smart gallopers both won hack races on heavy tracks at the Grand Nationa’ meeting. Royal Mail has failed to improve his record since he entered open company, but he has done all hu racing in that class on firm tracks. H< will be ridden by C. H. Mackie, and he should run well if he begins quicklv. Dan, which will be ridden by N. Eastwood, was third to Detective and Snuffbox in the sprint at the North Canterbury meeting on Labour Day. He has not raced since, but has pleased his trainer, F. D. Jones, in his recent training. Double Acceptor Programme, the New Zealand Derby winner, is engaged in both the Canterbury Cup and the Stonyhurst Handicap, and no decision had been made yesterday. If he runs in the Canterbury Cup he will be ridden by W. J. Broughton and will form a strong bracket with Hutton, a minor place-getter in the Harcourt Stakes at Trentham. Lekas and My Hero, the minor placegetters in the New Zealand Cup, will be solidly supported. My Hero may beat the Takanini mare at weight-for-age. Rustler would have been one of the favourites on a firm track. The task of winning over the distance on a soft track may be beyond him.

“Jamell will run whether the track is heavy or not,” said his Wingatui trainer, F. Shaw, yesterday. The Nightly gelding did not run in the New Zealand Cup because he does not race well on soft tracks. It will be surprising if he masters the conditions today.

Longford does not appeal on his cup run. Nor does Fo'c’sle on his Derby performance on a heavy track. Fo’c’sle will probably be kept for the Stonyhurst Handicap unless there is an unexpectedly marked improvement in the state of the track.

Though he appears better placed in the Fendalton Handicap, Noble Prince has his chance if reserved for this race. He was beaten only by Red Jester in the Harcourt Stakes at Trentham.

May Win Again Mightgo has better-than-average prospects of completing a double for the meeting in the Port Cooper High-weight. He is up 91b in the weights for his win on Saturday, but the class is not strong and the distance and condition of the track should be to his liking. A promising newcomer, Riga, should be Mightgo’s strongest opponent. His record in his last four starts in the south is one win and three seconds. He won over nine furlongs at Wyndham on a dead track, and the soft going is not expected to inconvenience him today. Aquelio, the top v/eight, and Pageant are also expected to run well over this distance.

Tallarook, a fast-finishing third behind Surrey Gold and Timanah in the Welcome Stakes, will be a firm favourite for the Irwell Handicap. This attractive Balloch colt should still be improving, and having proved himself in similar conditions,, his chance looks bright. Incomparable, the runner-up to Miss Bambton in the two-year-old race on the second day of the spring meeting at Trentham, and Kingship, should do best of the others. Count Defaulter, impressive winner of a novice race and a good second in a strong hack field at Trentham, is selected to win the Apprentices’ Handicap. His strongest opponent may be Hermes, a fair fifth in the Stewards’ Handicap on Saturday. Lord’s also raced well enough at Trentham to have a strong chance in this field. Peter Bruce was scratched yesterday, thus allowing Okaruru to return to the field.

Three-year-old Race Programme will be a firm favourite if he is reserved for the Stonyhurst Handicap, the race for three-year-olds. In his absence from the field the Riccarton filly Pleasure Bent should be hard to beat at her place in the weights. Pleasure Bent was an unlucky third m the Spring Plate on Saturday.

Gold Scheme did well to finish third in the New Zealand Derby on Saturday after a rough run. If he runs as well today he should be placed. Dormant, a winner in bad ground earlier in his career, should do best of the others. Arab is a doubtful starter.

Sheik has bright prospects of winning his second race for the meeting in the Ashley Handicap. The Bulandshar five-year-old revels in the heavy going, and with conditions to his liking on Saturday he completely outclassed his opponents in the Hagley Handicap. Purple Sage, an Invercargill-trained Royal Chief mare, has raced solidly in the south, and the top weight of 8-13 should not prevent her from being well to the fore at the finish. Ra and Roanne, both minor place-getters in their races on Saturday, and Paper Roysl, which raced solidly on a North Island 'campaign, are others with strong chances. The track may be too soft for West Riding.
