MAGELLAN WINS STAKES

MINOR EVENTS AT ADDINGTON

Magellan and Jaunty recorded sound trials for the New Zealand Derby Stakes, which will be run at Addington on November 22, when they finished first and second respectively in the Riccarton Stakes at Addington yesterday. Magellan broke at the start and was giving the leaders about 60 yards with one mile to run. Jaunty broke soon after the start, and lost about 24 yards.

Dancing Years made the pace, but with half a mile to run Jaunty raced round the field to join him in the lead. They turned for home together, ahead of Distant Star, which had received a run through on the inner. Black Douglas, Sandman, Magellan, Heroism, and Moss Hall. Jaunty was clear at the furlong, but Magellan responded gamely in the straight to win by a neck.

Distant Star held on gamely for third, four lengths back. If he could have secured a run on the firmer ground wider out, he would have been harder to beat.

Moss Hall, which lost his position in the middle stages of the race, made up ground for fourth, clear of Heroism. Dancing Years was right up next, ahead of Sandman, with Lodestar, Big Shot, and Air Command practically together. Consul, Icicle Lad, and Scottish Note lost ground early. Big Shot lost his chance when he met interference -at the start. Consul also broke with just over four furlongs to run. Gay Dene Wins Gay Dene, one of the best improvers raced last season, returned tp form in the Canterbury Handicap. He raced towards the rear of the field for most of the way, and with four furlongs to run he had at least six horses in front of him. He raced up very quickly to be on the outside of his bracketed mate, Gay Lyric, just behind Denbry and Sirocco, with Masterpiece, First Victory, and Forward showing up. Gay Dene .was clear at the furlong, but was challenged by First Victory. First Victory broke slightly just short of the post, and Gay Dene came on to win by more than a length. Masterpiecd, which had never been far from the leaders, finished on in the straight for third. He looked in need of the race, and should win during the meeting. Empire Lady made up a lot of ground to take fourth place, ahead of Forward, Gay Lyric, and Sirocco, with two lengths to Denbry, which made most of the pace. Affable, Springston’s Pride, and Red Chase lost their chance at the start. Night Flight Improves Night Flight showed improvement on her recent efforts when she won the Introductory Handicap. The Colosgal mare was never further back than fourth, and she revelled in the sloppy track conditions. Trixie Milne took the lead at the end of three furlongs, but she was under pressure at the straight entrance, where Inglewood and Emblazon were practically in line with her, just ahead of Aerogara, Night Flight, Ohio, and Tiberius (together). and Eureka Scott and Senate (together). Night Flight went to the front just inside the furlong and, although she appeared to be beaten by Eureka Scott, battled on. and won comfortably. Inglewood was a little slow away, but she moved into a handy position at the end of four furlongs. She ran on well without looking likely to catch the win-: ner. Eureka Scott was towards the rear of the field, but not far from the leaders, for most of the way. He finished well in the straight, and seemed to have the race won when he broke with about 50 yards to go. Emblazon was a fair fourth, ahead of Tiberius, which had broken at the start. There were four lengths to Aerogard, and two lengths to Ohio and Senate at the head of the others. Ohio, the favourite, had a perfect run, but he did not come on. Emblazon, Eureka Scott, Inglewood, and Virginia Scott, which was later pulled up, lost ground in the early running. Black Sentinel in Form Black Sentinel won his second race for the season and his sixth in the last 12 months when he held on to beat Inherit in the Spring Handicap. The Josedale Dictator gelding is an inelegant trotter, and he broke several times in the running. However, there are few horses with his ability to master adverse conditions. Red Valley made most of the pace, and he was joined by Black Sentinel neai' the straight entrance. They were two lengths clear of Bulls Eye, with Inherit and Mountain Range at the head of the others. Black Sentinel was in front at the furlong, and he held on to beat Inherit by half a length. Inherit also broke in the running, and appeared to be well out of his ground with one mile to run. He finished on well. He may win next time he races on a bad track. Red Valley was stooping in third place, clear of Bonus, which made up ground after breaking. Bulls Eye was a fair fifth, ahead of Ingenuity and Mountain Range. Mountain Range went down on the mud in the straight, but stopped to a walk. Lillian Mac, Mountain Range, Bonus, Vodka, and Loyal Wrack made mistakes in the running.
