TROTTING CUP TO MOBILE GLOBE

TROTTING

Field Outstayed On Dead Track TACTICIAN SECOND, AND VAN DIEMAN THIRD Revelling in the track conditions, Mobile Globe, a double winner at Addington in August, outstayed the field in the New Zealand Trotting Cup on the opening day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting yesterday. Mobile Globe was never far from the leaders, and N. L. Burkett took him through on the inside to take the Uad from Tactician just after the field straightened up for the run home. Mobile Globe was always pacing strongly over the last furlong, and was not required to do his best over the last 100 yards to beat Tactician by four lengths, with last year’s New Zealand Cup winner, Van Dieman, finishing strongly for third a length away, clear of Maori Home, which finished fourth in last year’s race. The race was robbed of considerable interest by the failure of the warm favourite, Johnny Globe. He was very distressed after the race. He was examined by a veterinary surgeon, who found him suffering from circulatory trouble. It is to be hoped that a rest will cure him, as his absence from main handicap and free-for-all events would be a great loss.

Heavy rain on Wednesday night soaked the track. It improved during the day, but was still slow when the cup was run, the horses racing about three or four sulky widths from the rails. Most of the cup horses were not at home in the going and they were well spread out in the straight.

The meeting was held in cool weather before a surprisingly large attendance estimated at 23,500, compared with about 25,000 last year. In these circumstances the on-course investments of £38,336 on the cup race were more than satisfactory. Last year these amounted to £40,907 10s. Off-course betting on the cup totalled £33,943 10s, making a total pool of £72,279 10 s. The on-course investments during the day amounted to £ 190,930 15s, including £ 14,686 15s on the double, compared with £213,059 10s last year. ,

Mobile Globe’s win was most popular, even though he was the 9, 9 favourite, and horse and driver were warmly applauded after passing the post and when they returned to the birdcage. Bred at Rangiora by Mr N. G. Mason and sold for 80 guineas to Mr J. Findlay, of Mosgiel, who now races him in partnership with Mr C. Smith, of Christchurch, Mobile Globe is a nine-year-old gelding by Springfield Globe from Helen Ann. He has now 13 wins and 23 placings for £14,705 in stakes, of which £7255 has been won since he joined Berkett’s stable towards the end of last season. He has had three wins from four starts since being trained at Yaldhurst. He was formerly trained by C. M. Laing at Eiffelton, and has always shown more than average ability. He should win again at the meeting. Mobile Globe’s win gave Berkett his first success in the' race, but it was the fourth time in the last six years that the Berkett family had trained the winner of the race. N. L. Berkett’s father, L. F. Berkett, won in 1947 and 1948, another son, C. R. Berkett, driving him in his first success. C. R. Berkett also trained Loyal Nurse to win in 1949. He had Young Charles in yesterday’s race, but he lost his chance through breaking at the start Berkett said after the race that he had a good run all the way with Mobile Globe. He did not have any anxious moments and was certain of winning just inside the furlong. Tactician, which has previously shown a preference for a firm track, did well to finish second. He was not pacing well for most of the race, but responded gamely when his trainerdiver, M. C. McTigue, sent him into the lead with three furlongs to run. He was well beaten just inside the furlong, but battled on to earn £l5OO for second.

“He surprised me the way he handled the going,” said McTigue after the race. “He wasn’t going too well early.” Van Dieman’s Effort Van Dieman, winner of last year’s race, was far from disgraced when he finished third. He was a fair way from the leaders on the inside most of the way. He had to switch to the outside in the straight and finished with a strong run, which, ended just before the post. Maori *Home was never far from the leaders, and when he moved round - the field near the straight entrance, it seemed that he might win. He was beaten at the furlong, but held on to take fourth place. Burns Night was not a possibility towards the finish. He raced on the heavier going most of the way and he stopped over the last 150 yards. Young Charles, which finished sixth, lost much ground early in the race, and he did well to finish so close up. The Auckland champion. Pleasant Smile, showed marked improvement on his effort at the Addington trials the previous Thursday. He set a solid pace, which had most of the field well beaten before the straight entrance. Pleasant Smile was beaten with three furlongs to run. He was a surprise 2, 3 favourite for the race. This was largely because of off-course betting. Soangetaha finished tenth after having a good run. His trainer, D. G. Jones, said that Soangetaha after the race was show-

ing signs of the cold that caused concern last week. .He would start on Friday if he was fit again. Dictation gave a brilliant display of troting to win the Worthy Queen Handicap. His win brought his stake-earnings to £11,445, the result of 13 wins and 20 placings. He came wide out in the straight from well back to win going away from Gold Horizon. The Josedale Dictator gelding should win again at the meeting. Other impressive efforts during the day were wins by Gay Dene in the Canterbury Handicap, Adorian in the Empire Handicap, and Magellan in the Riccarton Stakes.

Soangetaha began best in the New Zeamd Trotting Cup, but he was displaced i the lead at the end of two and a half

furlongs by the Auckland candidate, Pleasant Smile. With a mile and a half to run. Pleasant Smile was setting a strong pace on the heavy track. He was then clear of Soangetaha, with two lengths to White Angel, Tactician, Burns Night, Mobile Globe. Johnny Globe, Te Maru, Maori Home, and Van Dieman, with three lengths to Young Charles, and two to Vedette. Pleasant Smile attempted to slow the field down near the mile post, and Te Maru raced up to join him. Otherwise there was little change in the order. The field bunched with five furlongs to run, and there was no more than six lengths between the first and last horses.

Tactician gave a brilliant burst of speed to work clear with three furlongs to run,

and at the straight entrance he was clear of Mobile Globe, with a gap to Maori Home. Te Maru, Burns Night, and Pleasant Smile with Van Dieman and Vedette showing up further back. Mobile Globe came through on the inside, and soon had the measure of Tactician. He coasted home over the last 100 yards and won easing up by four lengths, ahead of a very tired lot. Tactician, which had not been suited by the track, ran a surprisingly good race. He should win at the meeting if the track is firm.

Van Dieman ran a sterling race for third, without threatening the two horses in front of him. He finished with a great burst through the middle of the field, but his run ended short of the post. Even then he was running on gamely under pressure. Maori Home was two lengths back in fourth place, two lengths clear of Burns Night, which raced on the inside where the going was inferior. Young Charles was right up next, five lengths tn front of Te Maru, Vedette and Pleasant Smile (together), with five lengths to Soangetaha, three lengths to Blue Mist and White Angel (together), and eight lengths to Johnny Globe. Vedette. Johnny Globe Morano, Young Charles, Te Maru, ana Tactician lost ground early. Morano failed to settle down, and he was never in the race. He was pulled up with five furlongs to run when well behind the field. Zulu Returns to Form

Zulu had his first win for almost a year when he beat a strong field in the Final Handicap. The Grattan Loyal gelding was never far from the leaders, and he went to the front witn four furlongs to run, when Indigo dropped out. At the straight entrance, he was closely attended by Heather Dillon. Realm Again, Mighty Song, Chamfer, Good Review, Victory Globe, Maida Dillon, and Laureldale.

Chamfer came through on the rails, but his run ended 75 yards from the post. Zulu came on again under pressure, and beat Heather Dillon by a short neck. Heather Dillon broke at the start but the slow pace early enabled her to get ud just behind the leaders. Realm Again, which also broke at the start, raced at the rear of the field most of the way. He finished on solidly to be only a neck back, third, with a similar distance to the

unlucky Laureldale. He was handy early, but lost his position. Once he worked clear, he finished brilliantly, and was racing better than any other horse at the post. It was a great effort, and he should win at the meeting. Victory Globe finished well for fifth, just ahead of Chamfer, with Mighty Song, the favourite, which had every chance, right up next, clear of Good Review and Maida Dillon at the head of the others. Good Review and Gough’s Pride lost ground early.

Dictation Brilliant Dictation returned to his brilliant best when he won the Worthy Queen Handicap. He began slowly, but did not lose much ground. Barrier Reef began smartlv from 12 yards, and was in front at the end of one furlong. He set a strong pace, and was just in front of Gold Horizon at the straight entrance, with Dictation showing up further out. Swanee River. Sure Charge apd Single Task were almost in line next, clear of Fair Isle. Gold Horizon appeared to have the race won, but Dictation finished with a brilliant burst wide out, and won going away by three lengths. Gold Horizon pulled double most of the way, and was racing well at the straight entrance. He did not run on as well as expected, and was stopping at the post, h TF . a l en £t h in front of Single Task, which finished with a fine late run. She was a head in front of her bracketed mate. Sure Charge, which also made up

There was a gap to Barrier Reef, which stopped just in front of Swanee River. Signal Light, which broke in the back straight, was three lengths back, well clear of. Fair Isle and Pat Review Precaution, Believe Me and Pat Review lost their chance at the start. Adorian Wins Well Adorian graduated to open class over two miles when he won the Empire Handicap. He raced at the rear of the field until about three furlongs from home, when he made a brilliant run wide out trac JS. to be almost on terms with Hall Ace, Flight Commander, and Lady Rowan at the straight entrance. Victory Sortg (on the rails). Proprietor, and Palava, headed the others. Adorian was clear well inside the furlong, and he held on gamely under pressure to beat Palava by a neck. Palava broke at the start but did not lose much ground. He finished with a great run on the outside, and was racing as well as any of the others at the post. Star Rosa finished on on the inside to take third place, half a length back, two lengths clear of Lady Rowan, which had appeared a likely winner approaching the furlong. Flight Commander, which did not pace kindly at some stages of the race, was fifth, three lengths clear of Hall Ace, Victory Song, and Proprietor. Palava, Victory Song, and Star Rosa lost a little ground at the start. Results:—
