PROPOSED HORNBY TOWNSHIP

PETITION TO PAPARUA COUNTY COUNCIL

A petition in favour of the proposed Hornby county township, signed by 329 of the 548 ratepayers in the area, was received by the Paparua County Council at its meeting on Monday evening. The petitioners said that only 29 of those asked to sign the petition had A special meeting of the council will be held next month officially to constitute the township. In the meantime, according to the procedure laid down under the Counties Act, maps setting out the boundaries of the proposed township will be available for one month for public inspection in the county office and in Hornby. The formation of the township will be confirmed at a subsequent meeting to be held in February. The petition also requests the appointment by the council of a committee of ratepayers from the township to advise the council on the administration of the township. The act requires this committee to comprise between three and seven ratepayers. The council itself has appointed the county chairman, the member for the riding (Mr R. J. Roberts), and the county clerk to arrange for the calling of a public meeting at Hornby in conjunction with the Hornby Residents’ Association, which was largely responsible for the petition. At this meeting nominations will be made for membership of the township committee. The final appointment of this committee will be made at a subsequent meeting of the council.
