SOUTH NEW BRIGHTON
CHANGE OF NAME PROPOSED To use the name South Brighton for the southern part of the former borough of New Brighton, when the central and northern parts remained known as New Brighton and North New Brighton, appeared rather incongruous, said the Lands and Survey Department in a letter received by the City Council last evening. The council was asked for its comments on the proposal to name the area South Brighton before the Geographic Board was asked to make a decision. A fact to be considered was that there was an existing and rapidly developing locality called Brighton a few miles south of Dunedin, said the letter. It was conceivable that the terms North and South Brighton could be used with more justification there. Regarding the proposal to give the name South Brighton Park to the socalled Pleasant Point Domain and Jellicoe Park, the letter said that the areas were vested for “planting purposes’’ and could not be treated as domain unless the purpose was changed. It could then be allocated a name. The letter was referred to the reserves committee, Cr. D. G. Amos suggesting that the duplication of names the world over be considered. Another name might be suggested for South New Brighton. Cr. M. B. Howard, M.P.: Call it Howardville.
