U.S. COAL STRIKE BEGINS
375,000 Miners Stop Work (Rec. 7 p.m.) NEW YORK. Oct. 20. Most of the 375,000 soft-coal miners m the United States refused to work today as a protest against the Govern-ment-ordered cut in the daily wage increase of one dollar 90 cents which they recently won from the mineowners. At least 304,000 were idle in 12 major coal-producing States. The strike came at a time when the coal stockpile is estimated to be 85.000,000 tons—a near record. Most of the miners said they considered the cut in wages as nullifying their contract. Members of the United Mine Workers’ Union traditionally do not work without a contract. Basil Radford Dead.—Basil Radford, the English actor, died in London today, aged 54. Radford toured New Zealand and Australia in 1927-28 in “The Ghost Train.”—London October 20.
