ROUND-UP OF TERRORISTS
“Situation Under Control” (Rec. 12.30 a.m.) NAIROBI, Oct. 21. The Kenya police, in a dawn raid today, arrested Jomo Kenyata, leader of the 100,000-strong Kenya African Union, and scores of other well-known Africans. The raid was a continuation of the mass round-up of terrorist suspects as a result of the proclamation of a state of emergency last night. The tense situation in Kenya eased today as British troops moved into the area and police swooped on suspects. The Government’s Chief Secretary (Mr Henry Potter) told the Legislative Council today that the situation was under control. He appealed to the public in all communities to carry out their normal activities. Mr Potter told the council that those arrested in the mass round-up of suspects during the night were believed to be mainly responsible for causing the disorder and lawlessness in the colony in recent months. A further contingent of Lancashire Fusiliers is expected to reach Nairobi today to help the overworked police fight the Mau Mau terrorists. By Thursday, about 1000 extra British troops will be in the area.
