TOP BLOWN OFF COMPRESSOR
AMMONIA FUMES FILli BUILDING When the top of one of the pressors in the cooling system blew 0” and released 16001 b of ammonia, «»• fumes caused the staff of the Christchurch Milk Company’s treating oI»J*J in Barbadoes street to beat a hasv retreat from the building early Thursday morning. The fumes invaded all parts of tn® building, and killed a hedge on tn« opposite side of the street. The building was evacuated until the fumes dispersed about 11 a.m. Employees donned gas masks and turned off the tap supplying the ammonia. The funw® lingered in isolated pockets, however, and caused some unpleasantness. Because of the fumes, the directors of the company, who had been scne»uled to hold a meeting at 9.30 a.ffij had to wait outside in the street untu the fumes dispersed sufficiently them to enter the building . Damage to the compressor will tax® several months to repair, but the supply of milk from the treating house has not been affected. The explosion caused a breakdown in the cooling system, and work was held up for tw ° hours.
