CITY BEAUTIFICATION
Sir—Permit me to endorse Mr Marshall’s congratulations to the reserves department of the City Council on the excellent appearance of the garden plots, and in particular the glorious show in the Botanic Gardens and the park of the rhododendrons and azaleas. Now just a little criticism of that awful triangular bed at the junction of High, Colombo and Hereford streets. The coping round the bed is almost level with the ground. 1 Until recently it was a rendezvous for many stray dogs for various purposes and pedestrials strolled across the apex of the bed, effectually finishing the miserable little plants attempting to grow. May I suggest to Mr Barnett that the plot be fenced with an irregular 12 or 15inch red stone wall (similar to the one opposite the High street Post Office). This would give shelter to the struggling annuals and prevent the pedestrians’ excursions.—Yours, etc., INTERESTED. October 17. 1952. [“I heartily agree with the correspondent regarding the damage done by uncontrolled dogs in this type of plot,’ said the director of parks and reserves (Mr M. J. Barnett), commenting on this letter. “I have had numerous complaints from members of my staff on the dog nuisance, and we have endeavoured to stop it. Ido not think, however. that a stone wall of the type suggested by the correspondent would eliminate the trouble. His suggestion, in any case, is a matter for the council. The only way we can keep these plots tidy and in good condition is to educate the pedestrians to respect their Own property and to see that dogs are controlled in the city area.”]
