Miss Jean McKenzie, Charge d’Affaires at the New Zealand Legation in Paris, is paying a private visit to London. She was met at the London airport by the High Commissioner (Mr F. W. Doidge) and Mrs Doidge, and she will be a guest at the New Zealand Society dinner in honour of the Governor-General designate, Lieutenant-General Sir Willoughby Norrie, tomorrow. —London, October 20. Miss Ngaio Marsh will return to New Zealand next year at the invitation of the professional theatre company being formed by Mr and Mrs Richard Campion, of Wellington. Mr Campion said yesterday that Miss Marsh had agreed to produce one of the company’s plays in me first season. —(P.A.) Miss E. S. Brown, of Wellington, Dominion secretary of the New Zealand Registered Nurses’ Association, left last .week for Hobart, where she will represent the association at the Australian Nursing Federation’s annual meeting, which began on Monday and will continue till October 27. Misses B. Wood, E. Craig, 1. Merry. V. Kettle, J. Sewell, and D. Chapman will attend the seventh biennial conference of the New Zealand Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs as delegates from the Christchurch club. The conference will be held at Lower Hutt during Labour week-end.

The twenty-second birthday of the Canterbury Navy League Sea Cadets, the first corps to be established in New Zealand, was celebrated by a well attended party arranged by. the Women’s Auxiliary of 'the Navy League held last. evening. The president, Mrs H. Wyatt, welcomed the guests and spoke of the significance of Trafalgar Day which is always observed by the auxiliary. Interesting films taken during her recent visit overseas were shown by Mrs G. van Asch. Lieutenant-Commander F. Glanville, officer in charge of the Canterbury Sea Cadets, thanked the auxiliary for its support, and outlined the work of the, sea cadets in Britain. Mrs L. Cookson thanked Mrs van Asch and Lieutenant-Commander Glanville.

Several places of historical interest and scenic beauty in Britain and Europe were described by Mrs H. E. Radley, guest speaker at the monthly evening social arranged by St. Bede's College Parents’ Association last weekend. At the conclusion of Mrs Radley's talk a Brains Trust comprising the Rev. Father B. J. O'Brien, Messrs J. P. Kennedy, B. Callaghan, and R. J. Hampton discussed several topical subjects submitted by the audience. The chairman was Mr Alex. McDonald. The specially invited guest was the rector of St. Bede’s College, the Very Rev. Father J. A. Mannix, S.M. Mr W. J. Donnelly presided, and Mr McDonald thanked the speaker.

Mrs Crozier gave an instructive lecture ana demonstration on decorative work at the October meeting of the Woodend Garden Club. Mrs J. R. Templin presided. The sum of £9 Is was raised at a sales table in aid of the Canterbury Horticultural Society’s building fund. Assistant hostesses were Mesdames P. G. Fotheringham, E. Foate, R. S. Kent, S. Steel, S. J. Thomas, and J. Barnett. Competitions resulted as follows,—decorative: A class, Mrs R. P. Jones 1, Mrs D. Egan 2; B class, Mrs V. D. Phillips 1, Mrs G. Simpson 2. “Women as Citizens” will be the theme of the seventh biennial conference of the New Zealand Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs to be held during Labour Day week-end at Frederic Wallis House, Lower Hutt. The conference will be opened by the retiring president, Miss Elsie M. Harper, of Wellington. Mr H. C. D. Somerset, the main speaker, will address delegates on Saturday evening on the topic, “Living in a Community.” Remits to be considered include one from the Christchurch club, which asks that State rental flats be provided for single women. Other business includes the formal reception into the federation of the Oamaru Levin, and Hawera. clubs, and th* selection of delegates’and observers to the Sixth Congress of the Internationa] Federation of Business and Professional Women, which will take place in Stockholm next year.

Mrs J. Cowell presided at the October meeting of the BeckenhamHuntsbury Garden Club. Mrs J. Taylor demonstrated the correct method of packing a presentation box of flowers, and also gave hints on the growing of seedlings without the aid of a glasshouse. Mrs Hall thanked the speaker. The October meeting of the ShirleySt. Albans Garden Club was held at the home of Mrs J. R. Burt, Knowles street. Miss A. M. Watson presided. The speaker was Mr Humm, who gave an interesting talk on the world’s gardens he has visited. A bring and buy stall was organised by the Knowles Group. The assistant hostesses were. Mrs F. A “Sing, Say, or Pay” afternoon was held recently by the Spreydon subcentre of the Red Cross Society. Mrs W. Connor presided. Arrangements were made for the visit and entertainment of the inmates of Jubilee Home in November. Letters of cheer and flowers were sent to sick members and those who had suffered bereavement. A letter of appreciation and thanks for parcels and gifts sent to her daughter was received from the mother of a French child sponsored by the sub-centre under the Save the Children Fund. Mrs A. Hobbs offered to pack and send a parcel to the child for Christmas.

The engagement is announced from Sydney of Miss Sheila Collett to Dr. Geoffrey Cutler, brother of Mr A. R. Cutler, V.C., Australian High Commissioner to Ceylon, and formerly holder of the same office in New Zealand. Miss Collett is private secretary to Lady Northcott and Miss Elizabeth Northcott, the wife and daughter of the Governor of New South Wales.
