Unfaan Wins At Randwick HYDROGEN BEATS DEEP RIVER (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, October 8. The New Zealand stayer Unfaan had his first Sydney success today when he ran home an easy winner from High Sense and Fleeting Beau in the Sydney Handicap at Randwick. At his two previous starts in Sydney, Unfaan had finished so determinedly over shorter distances that he started today a warm favourite at 6 to 4. The backers of Unfaan were not perturbed when he was near the rear of the field in the early stages, as the gelding was travelling comfortably. It was. not until after passing the halfmile that the jockey, G. Moore, called upon Unfaan for an effort. Responding immediately, Unfaan quickly made up ground, and raced into the straight behind the leading bunch. He had the race won at the Leger. The New Zealander Reversal was never prominent in the race, and finished well back. Hydrogen scored a brilliant win in the Craven Plate. Backed from 7 to 4 to even money. Hydrogen beat Deep River by a length and three-quarters, with Pressman two and a half lengths away, third. Hydrogen was always well placed, and won convincingly. Mr Head was reported to have said after Unfaan’s race on Saturday: “Although Unfaan has been in Australia more than three months, he is not properly wound up yet." A five-year-old gelding by Massowa from Satisfied, Unfaan built a fine record in New Zealand last season. From 19 starts he won three races and was nine times placed. His wins were in the Pirongia Hack Cup, at the Waipa Racing Club’s meeting, in the Hauraki Hack Cup at Ellerslie, and in the President’s Handicap at Trentham. In his Trentham win he beat such well-performed handicappers as Hutton, Longford, Royal Tan, Trench Fray, Rev, and Exiled King.
