PARLIAMENTARY DAY

(From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, October 8. Although Ministerial replies to questions were set down for debate today, the House of Representatives had no opportunity of discussing them. All afternoon was taken up with discussion of the reports of select committees, one of them concerning a petition of former shareholders of the Bank of New Zealand that shares taken over from them by the Government should be sold back to them. This evening the House began the second reading of the Companies Bill. The Government member for Lyttelton <Mr H. R. Lake) was one of the main speakers. His careful examination of the large bill prompted the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash) to move an extension of time. The House stood in silence for a _ minute as a mark of respect to the late Mr H. T. U. Marumaru, formerly a member of the Legislative Council. The House adjourned at 10.28 pjn. until 2.30 pm. tomorrow, when local bills will be debated. It is possible that the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) will give the House an opportunity tomorrow of discussing papers for consideration before a continuation of the debate on. the Companies Bill and Government legislation.
