U.N. VOLUNTEER RESERVE
Secretary-General’s Suggestion NEW YORK, October 6. Mr Trygve Lie, Secretary-General of the United Nations, has proposed the creation of a United Nations Volunteer Reserve numbering up to 60,000 men, available to support further action against aggression. The Collective Measures Committee, which examined the proposal, reported to the General Assembly that the plan was worth further study by the member States. Mr Lie proposed some two years ago the creation of a United Nations armed standing “Legion.” This year he informed the committee that after further study he had found his first plan to be impracticable at the present time. Time-Bomb Plot Foiled.—A man tried to blow up the Israeli Foreign Ministry, with a time-bomb today, but the attempt was foiled by the police. A ticking bomb containing about 6Jlb of explosives was seized on a man in the Foreign Ministry. The mechanism for exploding the bomb had already been set when the man was apprehended. The man was retained and the bomb dismantled.—Tel Aviv, October 5.
