RUGBY UNION FOOTBALL

Sir, —When the results of the various grades played under the Rugby Union were published the competition points gained by the winners and runnersup were given, with the exception of the 7st 71b grade. It would be of extreme interest to the players and followers of this grade if the Rugby Union will supply through the medium of your paper the answer to the following queries: 1. What are the competition points scored bv the four leading teams in the grade? 2. Has the competition been awarded to the team with the highest number of competition points, and, if not; why not? —Yours, etc., „ W. DAVIS.

September 22, 1952. [This letter was referred to the chairman of the competitions committee of the Canterbury Rugby Football Union (Mr R. W. .Blazey), who said: “On May 8, all clubs were officially notified that competitions in all grades would be completed on a specified day in the 1952 season. In the 7st 71b grade the original entry was 13 teams. The preliminary round was on April 26. It was decided that this grade be played in one section of 13 games. The first round would end on July 26, and the second round of two games on August 9, irrespective of any postponements. Of the 13 teams which originally entered withdrawals were received from Albion, Kaiapoi, Papanui Technical Old Boys, and High School Old Boys, and it was necessary that the whole competition be redrawn. This was done on May 10. Points for the competition games before the redraw could not be counted for the championship. Both the Canterbury Rugby Football Union and the junior advisory board were in agreement at the end of the season tjiat a decision could be reached only by a knock-out series. This was before September 9. The leading teams at this stage were Sydenham (11 points), Christchurch (10£), Technical Old Boys (10), and Marist (9). Points for the decision or the championship in any knock-out competition cannot be added to the ordinary competition games before the allocation of the above points. As everybody knows, Christchurch and Technical Old Boys played in the final of the'knock-out, the game ending in a draw, 3-all, and were bracketed winners of the grade for the season.”]
